Viceregal Lodge, also known as Rashtrapati Bhavan, is a historic building located on Observatory Hill in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. Earlier it used to be the summer residence of the British Viceroy. The construction of the building started in 1880 and was completed in 1888. It was designed by architect Henry Irwin in the Jacobean style. which incorporated elements of Scottish Baronial, Renaissance, and Gothic architecture. Visitors to the Viceregal Lodge can explore the stunning architecture of the building, and learn about its historical significance. Earlier the Viceregal Lodge was spread over an area of 331 acres but now it is spread over an area of 110 acres. Its structure also reflects the elements of the Palace of the Highlands and looks very beautiful. And the view around this lodge is very beautiful. The building is constructed mainly of gray sandstone and is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens and lawns. The interior of the lodge features gorgeous woodwork, elegant furniture, and exquisite stained glass windows. It has several rooms including the Viceregal Ballroom, Drawing Room, Dining Hall, and Council Chamber. These rooms were used for various official and social functions during the British Raj.
About Viceroy Lodge Shimla
After India gained independence in 1947, the Viceregal Lodge became the summer residence of the President of India. Rashtrapati Bhavan was converted into the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) in 1965 following the decision to shift the summer residence of the President to the nearby property “The Retreat”. The lodge also houses a library which houses an extensive collection. of books and manuscripts. The library is known for its valuable collection of books on a wide variety of subjects including history, literature, and politics. The Indian Institute of Advanced Study is an institution for research and higher education in the humanities and social sciences. It hosts various seminars, conferences, and research programs.
Viceregal Lodge Shimla Entry Fee
The Vice Regal Lodge, also known as the President’s Residence in Shimla, India, charges an entry fee for visitors. The entry fee for every Indian citizen is 100 and the fee for children of 5-12 years is 50/- each and for senior citizens 50rs. For Foreign people fee of 500rs. And Special Tour Rs. 1000/- for each. In regards to visiting hours, Vice Regal Lodge usually operates from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
