Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar Paramveer Chakra was born on 3 March 1976 in Kalol Bakain village of Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh. Sanjay Kumar is a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army. Recipient of Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military award.
Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar Early Life
Sanjay Kumar had to join the army. Sanjay Kumar’s schooling was done in Bilaspur only, he studied till the 10th and after that, he left the school. Major Sanjay Kumar belonged to a military family. His uncle was an army officer and his brother is also in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. That’s why he also wanted to become an army officer, he got inspiration from his uncle’s job. His application for the army was rejected three times. But he did not give up and after applying again he got selected. He told that before joining the army, he used to work as a taxi driver in New Delhi.
Military Career
Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar was selected in the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. and was posted as the Chief Scout of the team that captured Area Flat Top during the Kargil War on 4 July 1999. This whole area was under the control of Pakistani soldiers. The team was pinned down by Pakistani soldiers with machine gun fire from a bunker about 150 meters away. Kumar had realized the detrimental effect of capturing the flat top area of this bunker. But he did not give up and, crawling along the edge alone, along a flank, and through a shower of automatic fire, advanced towards the enemy bunker.
And immediately he was hit by two bullets in the chest and arm, causing profuse bleeding. But still, he kept on going. And in a hand-to-hand fight, he killed three enemy soldiers. He then gunned down the enemy soldiers with an enemy machine gun. This encouraged the rest of the soldiers as well and they also moved forward. and occupied the flat top terrain. In February 2022, he attained the rank of Subedar Major and is posted at the National Defense Academy in Khadakwasla near Pune.
Awards and Decorations
During his career, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra on Independence Day 1999 for his role in Operation Vijay. And he was promoted to the rank of Subedar Major in February 2022.
