Brajeshwari Devi temple is one of the famous Hindu temples. It is located in the Nagarkot Town of Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. This temple is dedicated to the goddess brajeshwari. Brajeshwari Devi temple was built over the scorch(burn) breast of Shri Sati. Shri Sati has married Lord Shiva against her father, Daksha. Daksha was organizing a yagna, he invited all the gods except Lord Shiva and Sati. Sati was attending the function, without the permission of Shiva. When Sati entered the palace she was insulted by her father. Sati was unable to tolerate her father’s disrespect for her husband then Sati sacrificed herself in the sacred fire Brajeshwari Temple.
When Lord Shiva heard this he was very furious then lord Shiva carried the dead body of Sati in his arms and he started to dance for the destruction of this universe. Lord Vishnu cut Sati’s body into pieces with his Sudarshan chakra to save this universe. Sati’s body pieces fell in different places. These are called Shaki Peethas. Sati’s right breast fell down at this part of Nagarkot village and making it a Sakthi Peeth. Here Sati worshiped as brajeshwari, Bhairava is Abhiru.
One day Pandavas saw goddess kali in their dream in which she told them that she is situated in Nagarkot village. She wants to make a temple for her in that area otherwise they will be destroyed. So, they made a temple for her in that area. Inside the temple, the goddess brajeswari is in the form of Pindi. This temple also has a small temple of Bhairav(Shiva). The idol of Dhayanu Bhagat is also present in this temple. He provided his head to the goddess at the time of Akbar. The structure of this temple contains three thumbs, which is unique.
