Nahan is a city located in the Sirmour district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state at an altitude of about 932 meters above sea level. Nahan serves as the administrative headquarters of the Sirmaur district. There are many ponds here, hence Nahan is also called the city of ponds. History of Nahan

Nahan was founded in 1621 by Raja Karam Prakash, a scion of the Rajput Sirmour dynasty. The city used to be the capital of the princely state of Sirmaur during the British Raj. There is also another history of Nahan which is said that a saint lived at that place with a companion named Nahar. which means ‘don’t kill’ and the name of the city is probably derived from that incident. The name of the saint is said to be Baba Banwari Das. There is also another story that Nahar means lion in Sanskrit. The place where there is Nahan, lions used to live in the place, hence it was named Nahar.
