Kareri Lake is an externally beautiful calm and high-altitude freshwater lake located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The lake is at an altitude of 2,934 meters above sea level. The lake is surrounded by dense forests of deodar and rhododendron trees. It is formed by the melting of snow from the Dhauladhar range of mountains, it is a natural lake. The lake is known for its crystal-clear water and serene environment. The place is considered a popular one for camping and picnics. Kareri Lake is located at a distance of about 3-4 hours from Dharamshala. One has to climb about 9-10 km from Kareri village.
Kareri Lake Trek
Kareri Lake Trek is considered to be a popular trekking route in the Kangra district. The trek starts from Kareri village, which is located at a distance of about 2 hours from Dharamshala. It takes around 2-3 days to complete the trek and depending on your speed. One has to cross dense forests of deodar and rhododendron trees and several streams and waterfalls on the way. The route offers spectacular views of the Dhauladhar range of mountains. The trek can be undertaken between April to June and September to November. The weather remains clear and pleasant during these months. In winter the trail gets covered with snow and the lake freezes over. Trekking enthusiasts can do this track in winter. Kareri Lake Trek Distance
The trek to Kareri Lake is about 9-10 kilometers long, starting from Kareri village. And the lake is at an altitude of about 2,934 meters above sea level. The trek can be completed in 1-2 days, depending on how much time you want to spend at the lake. Additionally, it is recommended to carry enough water, food, and warm clothes during the trek, as facilities for these may be limited along the way. The trekking trail passes through dense forests, rivers, and several small villages and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The initial part of the trek is easy and gradually becomes more challenging as you reach higher altitudes.
Dharamshala to Kareri Lake
The distance from Dharamshala to Kareri village, which is the starting point of the Kareri Lake trek, is around 30 km. Once you reach Kareri village, the trek to Kareri Lake begins. The trek is around 9-10 km long and takes around 4-6 hours to complete depending on your speed and weather conditions. You can either hire a private taxi or take a public bus to reach Kareri village from Dharamshala. The bus leaves from Dharamshala bus station and takes approximately 2 hours to reach Kareri village. Private taxis can be booked from Dharamshala or arranged through your hotel or trekking company.
